Here are some ways to beat sugar cravings, according to tips from Cosmopolitan and Prevention magazines.
Try to crack the sugar craving naturally by totally banning sugar from your diet for several days. Be forewarned this isn't easy. You might even experience a kind of withdrawal, including headaches.
Is a sugar craving a sign of imbalance? Traditional Chinese medicine says so and recommends rectifying it with bitter foods, such as arugula, radicchio, endive or chicory. Eat one to two servings a day.
Eat small meals every three to four hours throughout the day. Menu ideas include a whole wheat sandwich with some kind of protein filling, fruit, vegetables or nuts.
Fruit can help you overcome a sugar craving, but it has to be the right kind. Choose berries, apples and pears and avoid pineapple and watermelon.
Do not consume any refined foods, including white bread, cake and biscuits.
Drink about two liters of water throughout the day. Did you know that coffee, tea and energy drinks can actually trigger sugar cravings?
An essential mineral you need to stabilize your blood sugar level is a trace element called chromium that is found in baked beans, peanut butter, shell fish and whole grains.
If you think the craving is caused by boredom, try brushing your teeth. The clean taste in your mouth will make you less likely to eat.
When you eat, turn on the lights and turn off the TV. You'll eat less.
Hey Tara- are you willing to go without sugar for a week with me? I don't think I can do it alone. Have you found other tips on beating sugar cravings?

Kashi Waffles
Just FYI- Target carries Kashi waffles and pretty much everything else that Kashi makes. I take their frozen food to work for lunches.
Oh, and my other Target find today: low sodium v-8! It's only 3% of your RDA of sodium, instead of 13% like the original. I'll let you all know how it goes.
In other news, I worked out over 7 hours last week. I gave my body a day off today, and I am already excited for working out tomorrow.

Sleep, Oh Sweet Lovely Sleep
According to Julia Ross, M.A. , this is what a good night's sleep looks like:
For most people the best sleep takes 8 hours, runs from dark to dawn - ideally from 10 pm, or earlier to 6 am or so - and leaves you feeling great. You should actually start feeling sleepy within about three hours after the sun sets are you sleep-promoting brain chemicals are triggered by the reduced light. When you actually hit the pillow, it should take only a few minutes for you to get to sleep. Once you get to sleep, you should say asleep through the night (without bathroom trips!). Ideally, you'll go through a series of vital sleep sequences that take at least eight hours to complete. At lease six of those hours should be uninteruppted.
Now I know this kind of sleep is possible because I see Keith experience it every night but I don't think that I have EVER slept for six hours straight. And what is this nonsense about falling asleep minutes after hitting the pillow? Have any of you actually had this happen to you? If so I'm so freaking jealous!
I know that I would reap huge rewards if I would just go to bed earlier. (My natural body clock wants to be asleep by 10:30. ) It is so hard when you are married to a night owl though.

Oil Cont...
Glad you liked the olive oil, Tara. By the way, I told me new hair guy that I put olive oil on my hair and he said that is fine but Weleda Rosemary Hair Oil works even better. Apparently you can buy it at Whole Foods or Wild Oats. Look for the little green bottle. He also said that the Whole Foods in Fort Union doesn't have this particular brand so you have to go to the one in SugarHouse or on 4th South. -A

My thoughts in response to Abbie's Confusion
This is my response to Abbie's comment to the Ezekial bread post expressing confusion about the mood cure book:
I think EVERYTHING is bad for someone or other. I really think that we could drive ourselves crazy with worrying about this thing or that thing and trying to control every aspect of our food and our environment. But I think no matter who you are, eating whole grains, eating lots of fruits and veggies, drinking a lot of water, exercising, and not worrying will make 99% of us healthier and happier than we are now. Everything else I see as a hell of a lot of effort for very little output. I think you could end up putting in 15% of your time to get a 1% increase in your health. A long bath, a massage, and hanging out with friends will give you a lot more than worrying about soy...or rye...or heavy metals...or wheat...etc. The trick is to sift through the advice and find what is relevant and works for you. Dump the rest. That's my philosophy anyway.

Ezekiel Bread
Ezekiel Bread- Brand "Food For Life" (Can find in most health food stores)
Not only is it flourless it tastes good!!!! TIP- Keep it in the fridge because it can mold fast since there are NO PRESERVATIVES!!
Different from most breads today, Food For Life sprouted grain breads are made from freshly sprouted certified organically grown live grains and contain absolutely no flour.
The secret is in the sprouts! We believe in sprouting the grains we use in our breads because sprouting is the only way to release all of the vital nutrients stored in whole grains.* To unlock this dormant food energy, maximize nutrition and flavor, we add just the right amount of water to healthy whole organically grown grains which are already bursting with nutrients. Beneficial enzymes are activated which cause the grains to sprout and become a living food.Food For Life breads, made from sprouted grains, are richer in protein and vitamins than bread baked from dry grains ground into flour. Our exclusive sprouting process not only significantly increases valuable nutrients such as vitamin A, vitamin C, B-vitamins, calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium but also causes a natural change that makes the protein and carbohydrates easier for the body to use. In fact, sprouts are lower in carbohydrates and calories than the grains from which they were sprouted. And even better still, our exclusive baking process preserves these valuable nutrients and retains the important natural fiber and bran.
Our breads contain no refined sugar, no preservatives, no artificial colors or flavors, no shortening and no cholesterol, so they’re better for you.

Sugar Addiction
Hey Lins, I'm reading The Mood Cure right now. (Fascinating book, by the way.) It has a few paragraphs on sugar addiction then the author says:
My first book, The Diet Cure, deals extensively with sugar addiction, its devastating effects on both mood and health, and how it can be overcome.
You might want to check it out.

Linsey's Goals- March 26- April 30
Two of my goals I am still struggling to meet consistently so they are being carried over to this month:
1- Do aerobic activity 4 times a week and pilates 2 times a week
2- Eat at home at least 4 nights a week
The new challenges:
1-Get dental insurance
2- Make a dentist appointment
3- Switch to a cheaper car insurance
4- Eat 12-15 servings of vegtables a week (v8 might help)
5- Research how to stop craving sugar every day
6-Stand up for myself in all the little ways I normally just let slide.
7- Start researching anatomy for my pilates class

Abbie's Goals, March 26 - April 30
- Visit dentist
- 17 servings of vegetable/week
- Get haircut from Eddie
- Go off Pill
- Get Plan B
- Research IUD
- Eat more grains including ezekial bread and quiona
- Consider detox
- Read at least half of The Mood Cure book http://www.moodcure.com/
- Stop compartmentalizing my body. Every time I start to focus on my stomach quickly focus on three things that I like about my body.
Vegetable Servings
The USDA Food Guide Pyramid recommends 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables every day.
And getting 5 to 9 servings is easier than you may think.
A serving size is:
One medium-size fruit
1/2 cup raw, cooked, frozen or canned fruits (in 100% juice) or vegetables
3/4 cup (6 oz.) 100% fruit or vegetable juice
1/2 cup cooked, canned or frozen legumes (beans and peas)
1 cup raw, leafy vegetables
1/4 cup dried fruit
Wondering how many servings you really need each day?
Children (2-6 yrs.), women, and others who typically need about 1,600 calories to reach or maintain a healthy weight:5 servings – 2 fruits, 3 vegetables
Older children, teen girls, active women, and most men who typically need about 2,200 calories to reach or maintain a healthy weight:7 servings – 3 fruits, 4 vegetables
Teen boys and active men, who typically need about 2,800 calories to reach or maintain a healthy weight:9 servings – 4 fruits, 5 vegetables

Beauty Tips
I propose that we post our best health and beauty tips for the group. I'll start. -Abs
1) Once a week or so I massage olive oil into my hair. I leave it on for an hour or so then shower and condition like usual. It is the only thing that gets my hair through the brutal Utah Winters.
2) Speaking of moisturizing, I highly recommend rubbing Carmex brand chapstick into your nails and cuticles.
3) Always wear your belt one notch looser than it needs to be. It will take 5 pounds off of your middle.
4) My favorite brand of sunscreen is Neutrogena Ultra-Sheer Dry-Touch SPF 45.
5) If you haven't already, check out SPANX. They are the modern woman's girdle.

Something I love
Here is something I love - Kashi Golean blueberry waffles. They actually taste like homemade multigrain, blueberry waffles. They take about a minute to cook in your toaster oven and come out crispy and hot. They have protein, 25% of your daily fiber, and if you throw some fresh or frozen berries on top, you have a fantastic, luxurious breakfast. And enough fuel for tennis class!

Electrodermal Screening
Jaime does EDS and now Abbie wants a shot at it too. For more information, go to http://www.wholehealthne.com/about/electro-dermal-screening/
If you know of a practitioner who has access to a machine then let Abbie know.

Abbie Recommends Biometric Screening
Hey Chicas,
I went in for my first blood test in God knows how long. The nurse said that I'm in "phenomenal health". My HDL (or good cholesterol) score was off the charts. Now I wish that I'd done the blood test before I started FAB B4 30. It would have been fun to see the improvement.
Barb, you can sign up for a free screening through the WellU program. It only takes 15 minutes and you get your results immediately.
The others will be able to receive this test from their regular doctor.

Questions to cover during next meeting
1) Do Jaime and Tara want to post a link to their blogs and webpages?
2) How do people feel about having their goals posted online?
3) What do you think about the site? How should we display our goals?

University Fitness Testing
All testing is done by appointment only.
Please call 585-7325 to schedule your test.
Aerobic Fitness Testing (Maximal and Submaximal)
Your cardiovascular fitness can be measured by performing a maximal or submaximal exercise test on a bicycle or treadmill. You can find out your Max VO2, Anaerobic Threshold, Max Heart Rate, and Training Heart Rate. Aerobic Tests Available
Anaerobic Power Testing
Your anaerobic power can be measured by performing the Wingate test on a bike. Anaerobic Tests Available
Body Composition Analysis
The two major components of your body (fat free/lean mass and fat mass) can be analyzed by several methods. We offer skinfold measurements and BOD POD body composition analysis. Body Composition Tests Available
Cholesterol/Glucose testing
We use a finger prick cholesterol measuring method. There are three benefits to measuring cholesterol this way. First, no needles! Second, you receive the results before you leave. Third, you will also get your fasting glucose level - a good indicator of diabetes risk. The whole process takes about 5-minutes. Our machines are certified to be as accurate as laboratory testing! Results include total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, TC/HDL ratio, triglycerides and glucose. ($40 community, $30 University)
Fitness Program Development
This service includes a 60-minute consultation/training session with a PEAK staff member and a one-month fitness program. The program can either focus on strength/endurance building or aerobic fitness development. ($60 community, $50 University)
Please call 585-7325 to schedule your test.

I met with the University nutritionist. For the most part she was completely uninformed and unhelpful, but she did send me some good links that I'll pass along. I really liked mapmyrun. It turns out that the track around liberty park is 1.3 miles.

My Thought Coach, Welcome Jaime, and Dancing
Hey Fabuloussies,
1) I wanted to tell you all about something fabulous. I recently discovered My Thought Coach on ITunes. The podcasts contain affirmations and guided meditations by Stin Hansen. They have been hugely helpful in maintaining my energy level and motivation. Some of my favorites are Think Like The Owner Of A Strong Body and Think Like A Healthy and Moderate Eater. I also listen to the relaxation meditations while in bed. They have really helped me reach my goal of sleeping at least 8 hours a night. I would love to burn each of you a CD. Please let me know if you are interested and, if so, what type of themes you are interested in. (For example, I thought of Linsey when I saw meditations about financial organization and career success. I thought of Jaime when I saw meditations about being assertive and setting boundaries.) For more information on Stin Hansen visit http://www.mythoughtcoach.com/ or you can download a few free podcasts on Itunes.
2) Welcome Jaime. Thanks for sending your action items for the year. Between now and our next meeting you'll want to brainstorm 4 or 5 small steps that you can take right now to reach your goals. Speaking of next meeting, is there anyway that we could meet on the 26th or 27th instead of the 24th? Tara, if you don't want to drive down then you could conference in online. Or we could drive up to Layton. I don't mind doing that.
3). How are you guys doing on your goals? I kept a log of my vegetable intake and was shocked to discover that I only ate 12 servings last week. And that was with me really working on it! I bought a six pack of v8. Hopefully that will help me to do better this week. I'm excited for girl's night. Do you guys want to meet at my house on Saturday at about 7? We can pre-party for a bit then Keith will drive us wherever. I'm thinking either Habits or Port O' Call. I'm up for anything though. (Wish you could be there, James.)
GO US!!

In the beginning there was The Beginning
Hey,
So I had an idea yesterday. I was driving in my car, listening to a health podcast, and they were talking about how hard it is on your body to turn 30. It doesn't happen over night of course but in general it is a lot harder to lose weight and be in shape during your 30s then it is during your 20s. I realized that if this is my "last best year", as Kaj would say, then I want to go out with a bang. More importantly I want toturn 30 feeling more healthy and vibrant than ever before. Therefore, I'm going to start the FABULOUS BEFORE THIRTY club. It isn't really a club per say. More a system of checks and balances with a dose of moral support so that all of us 29 years olds keep up with our goals. Linseyhas already committed to being the second member of the group. (She turns 30 on March 8th). Do you want to join us?
